  T he H istorical D evelopment of S ocial M edia     The Historical Development of social media can be divided into three time periods . It started with Pre Internet Roots, t hen onto the Launch of Social Sites a nd now on to Modern social media .   The pre internet roots - social media began in 1844 approximately May 24 th with a series of electronic dots and dashes tapped out by hand on a telegraph machine.    The launch of social sites: the first social media site , Six Degrees, was created in 1977 . Other early social media sites include Friendster, Myspace , and LinkedIn.   Social media today has drastically changed since when Six Degrees was released now the more modern social media platforms consist of some of the biggest companies in the world such as Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter now known as X and many more .
