The societal issues raised by social media - Written by Nataliia Harasymiuk
Social media has a cultural impact on fashion and food trends, family and teen health issues, world news and local events, and political and civic events. Social media has given rise to a new type of marketing through the use of a unique virtual public figure: the social influencer.
Unfair Platform Power
A small number of tech companies control the largest social networks. Their decisions can affect freedom of speech, control information flow, and impact elections or protests. This raises ethical questions about corporate responsibility and government regulation.
Misinformation and Disinformation
False information spreads quickly on social media, influencing public opinion on health, politics, and current events. This contributes to confusion, distrust in institutions, and public division — especially during elections, pandemics, or global crises.
Harmful Influence on Youth
Children and teenagers are especially vulnerable to social media’s influence. Exposure to inappropriate content, unrealistic beauty standards, and harmful trends can affect their development, behavior, and mental health.
Job and Economic Inequality
Not everyone has equal access to the benefits of social media. Some use it to build careers or businesses, while others are left behind due to lack of access, digital skills, or economic barriers — widening the digital divide.
When we understand thesocietal issues, we’re better prepared to create a healthier, safer digital world for everyone.
